Chemistry is closely connected to many of the challenges and opportunities that shape our World. The substances chemists develop, the processes they create, and the decisions they make can affect energy systems, natural resources, ecosystems, and society. For students of chemistry related subjects, learning chemistry is therefore not only about understanding chemical concepts and relevant processes but also about seeing how chemistry is used in the real world and learning to apply that knowledge thoughtfully and responsibly.

The project “Förderung ethischer Reflexion in der Chemie” introduces a case-based e-learning platform that can be embedded within existing curricula. Based on subject specific relevant topics from individual courses, the platform enables students to explore and discuss their ethical, social, environmental, and economic dimensions while developing critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and informed decision-making skills.

Currently, the project is in its pilot phase, with the first version of the platform being developed and tested in the field of geochemistry. This pilot provides the foundation for further adaptation to other chemistry-related study programs and curricula.

The project is a joint initiative of the Institute of Applied Geosciences – Geochemistry & Economic Geology and the KIT-Academy for Responsible Research, Teaching and Innovation (ARRTI).
