Research statement

My current and future research aims at understanding the processes that control the mobility and cycling of trace elements (e.g. As, Se, Hg, Cr) and nutrients (e.g. P) in various environments (e.g. karst, water-soil-plant systems, geothermal systems, marine environment). This understanding is used to tackle the following objectives: (1) Characterizing the influence of anthropogenic activities (e.g. agricultural practice, irrigation, mining) on groundwater, soil and food quality, (2) Paleoclimate and -environmental reconstructions using speleothems, (3) Extracting critical elements from geothermal brines, (4) Determining element fluxes (rivers to marine systems), etc. My research is based on high quality (isotope)geochemical and mineralogical data, which I obtain from a combination of field and lab work. Through the lab (Laboratory for Environmental and Raw Material Analysis (LERA)), which I´m head of, I have access to numerous standard and high sophisticated analytical methods (XRD, XRF, IR-MS, (LA)-ICP-MS etc.). Furthermore, I´m interested in improving and developing analytical methods.
